FPD International 2009 Embraces ‘Green Innovations’ and ‘3D Touch Entertainment’, in Yokohama, Japan

At FPD International 2009, held in Yokohama, Japan, panel industry heavyweights around the globe have convened and showcased products on the themes of "Green innovations" and "3D touch display", noted Witsview analysts who attended the event. Featured in the exhibition, LG Display showcased the world’s first 47-inch 480Hz panel, while its 3D models are equipped with a wide variety of applications, such as the mode switch between 2D and 3D, took the spotlight. Another highlight at the event, Samsung unveiled the world’s slimmest LCD panel, measuring 3.9mm thick – the product adopts the energy-saving edge-lit LED backlights. AUO also demonstrated its innovative display technology by introducing the 65-inch 2D/3D Mixed Mode Display panel, and flexible e-paper. In touch-type products, AUO featured a variety of small-sized panels with in-cell technology, which emphasize the smooth “Multi-touch ten-point” touch screen function. Meanwhile, Chi Mei focused on energy saving features – through its ultra power-saving technology, it has achieved an ultra low power consumption of 2-inch per watt; additionally, by reducing carbon emission and using eco-friendly materials, Chi Mei aims at ensuring a ‘greener’ supply chain. Sharp also introduced the UV2A technology which lowers power consumption by enhancing the contrast ratio to 5000:1, and increasing the aperture ratio.

Panel component makers’ exhibitions also clearly reflected current market trends. Spurred by the energy-saving concept, 3M dominated the optical film segment with its patented DBEF. Furthermore, after LED solidified its presence in backlight applications, Toshiba also ventured into the promising LED lighting market with extreme optimism. As for glass substrate, despite NEG’s demonstration of its 10G products, the TFT industry lacked firm commitment in the investment of next-generation fabs; instead, backed by the popularity of touch-screens, glass substrate processing and surface treatment technologies garnered more attention. Sumitomo also showcased its new non-TAC polarizer materials; although the product is still in the development stage, this new addition has invigorated the long-term market oligopoly. Finally, with the rise of edge-type LED backlit TVs, polarizer market became a new battlefield; leading diffuser plate makers such as Zeon have begun to invest in the design and development of its related products.
